You’ve got the plans drawn up. Maybe it’s a bumped-out family room, a primary suite over the garage, or finally closing in that back porch. The framing and drywall get all the attention, but somewhere in there a licensed electrician has to tie your brand-new room into a system that, in a lot of La Grange homes, was wired decades before anyone owned a laptop, let alone three of them.
That tie-in is where additions get interesting. I’ll walk through how the wiring for a room addition actually connects to your existing home, what the code requires for a new living space, and the one question that decides whether the job is smooth or turns into a panel upgrade halfway through.
Quick note: this is general guidance from a licensed local crew, not a fixed quote. Every addition and every panel is different, which is sort of the whole point.
The Big Question: Can Your Panel Handle a New Room?
Before we run a single wire, we figure out whether your existing electrical panel has room for the new load. A bedroom addition might only add a couple of circuits. A family room with recessed lighting, a mini-split, and a wall of outlets adds more. A suite with its own bathroom adds more still.
Here’s where La Grange comes in. Plenty of homes in the older parts of the village, especially around the historic core near the Metra stops, still run on 100-amp service. That was fine for the original footprint. Add square footage with modern electrical demands, and the panel can run out of open breaker slots or simply out of capacity. When that happens, the addition quietly becomes an addition plus a service upgrade.
We run a load calculation first. It’s not a guess; it’s adding up what your home already draws, adding what the new room will pull, and seeing whether the panel has headroom. If it does, we tap in and move on. If it doesn’t, you’ll hear about it from us on day one, not as a surprise line item after the drywall’s up.
How the New Wiring Physically Ties In
Once we know the panel can take it, the tie-in itself follows a fairly predictable path. Here’s what’s actually happening behind the walls:
- New circuits at the panel. Most additions get their own dedicated circuits rather than piggybacking on existing ones. That keeps the new room from tripping breakers that serve the rest of the house.
- Home runs from the panel to the addition. We run new cable from the panel, through the existing structure where needed, out to the new space. In older La Grange homes this sometimes means fishing wire through finished walls, which takes more care than an open new-construction stud bay.
- Rough-in before insulation. All the boxes, cable, and connections go in while the framing is still open. This has to pass a rough-in inspection before anything gets covered.
- Devices and finish after drywall. Outlets, switches, fixtures, and the fan get installed once the walls are closed and painted, followed by a final inspection.
The trickiest part is almost always that connection point where new meets old. If the existing wiring near the tie-in is outdated, say, ungrounded or the old cloth-insulated stuff, we address that before building on top of it. You don’t want a shiny new room running off a compromised foundation.
What Code Requires in a New Living Space
A new room isn’t just “add some outlets.” The National Electrical Code sets minimums for habitable spaces, and an inspector will check them. A few that come up on nearly every La Grange addition:
- Outlet spacing. Per NEC Article 210, receptacles must be placed so no point along a wall is more than 6 feet from an outlet, which works out to an outlet roughly every 12 feet, plus any wall 2 feet or wider needs one.
- AFCI protection. Bedrooms, family rooms, and similar living areas require arc-fault protection on those circuits to guard against the kind of arcing that starts fires.
- A switched light. Every habitable room needs a wall-switched lighting outlet near the entrance.
- Fan-rated boxes. If there’s any chance a ceiling fan goes in, the box has to be rated to hold one. Cheap insurance against a future headache.
- GFCI where needed. If the addition includes a bathroom, wet-bar, or exterior outlets, those need ground-fault protection.
Pulling a permit and passing inspection isn’t red tape here. It’s the paper trail that protects your home’s value and keeps your insurance valid if anything ever goes wrong.
Why the Tie-In Is the Part You Don’t Want to DIY
Adding outlets in an open wall is one thing. Safely marrying new circuits into an older La Grange panel, sizing the load correctly, and getting the grounding right where new wiring meets decades-old wiring is another. Get the load calculation wrong and you either overload a panel or pay for an upgrade you didn’t need.
This is also the stage where hidden problems surface: an overloaded panel, a bootleg ground from a previous owner’s “improvement,” or wiring that should have been replaced years ago. A licensed electrician catches those before they get sealed inside your new wall.
