What Causes Garage Outlets to Stop Working?

By Cob Services – Your Neighbors & Electricians in Naperville, IL

We’ve all been there. You head out to the garage to start a weekend project, plug in your saw or the leaf blower, and… nothing. No hum, no lights, just total silence.

It’s incredibly frustrating, especially when your garage has become more than just a place to park—it’s your workshop, your gym, or the home for that extra fridge full of drinks. Usually, the culprit is something simple, but occasionally, your house is trying to tell you something important about its safety.

Here’s a down-to-earth guide on why your garage power took a nap and how to get things hummin’ again.

1. The “Ghost” GFCI Trip

This is the #1 reason we get service calls. Garages are legally required to have GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets because moisture and electricity are a bad mix.

The trick: One “master” GFCI outlet usually protects a bunch of “dumb” outlets down the line. If the master trips, everything else goes dark.

  • Check this: Look for an outlet with those little “Test” and “Reset” buttons. It might not even be the outlet you’re using! Check behind the workbench or even in the nearby laundry room.
  • The Fix: Push that RESET button until it clicks.

2. The Breaker Took a Break

If the GFCI isn’t the problem, head to your electrical panel. Breakers trip to prevent your house from catching fire when a circuit gets overwhelmed (like running a space heater and a table saw at the same time).

  • Check this: Look for a switch that isn’t lined up with the others—it might be stuck in the middle.
  • The Fix: Flip it all the way to OFF, then back to ON. If it snaps right back to the middle? Stop. That’s a sign of a “hard short,” and you need to call us.

3. The Secret GFCI Location

This is the “fun” one. Builders sometimes wire garage outlets to a GFCI located in a totally random spot, like a basement bathroom or an outdoor outlet by the back deck. If you’ve checked the garage and found nothing, go on a scavenger hunt through the house for any outlet with a reset button.

4. Garage Life is Hard on Hardware

Unlike your living room, your garage deals with sawdust, humidity, and spiders. Over time, the internal wiring can wiggle loose from the vibration of the garage door or temperature swings.

  • The Warning Signs: If you see any brown “toastiness” on the outlet face, or if your plug feels loose and wiggly when you shove it in, the outlet is worn out. This is a fire hazard—don’t ignore it!

5. It’s Not the Wall, It’s the Tool

Before you blame the house, check your gear. Sometimes a frayed cord on an old power tool or a compressor that’s pulling too many amps is what’s causing the shut-down.

  • The Test: Plug a simple lamp or a phone charger into the outlet. If the lamp works, your power tool is the problem.

When to Wave the White Flag

We’re all for a little DIY, but electricity doesn’t give second chances. You should definitely give us a call if:

  • You smell something “fishy” or like burning plastic.
  • The breaker trips the second you reset it.
  • You see sparks when you plug things in.
  • You’ve tried the resets and you’re still in the dark.
