The call I get most often about induction goes like this. The range is already bought. It is sitting in the garage in its box, delivery is Thursday, and somebody has just noticed there is no 240-volt outlet behind the stove.
That is a solvable problem. It is just a much more expensive and slower problem on Thursday than it was six weeks earlier, and in a few Naperville houses it turns out not to be solvable at all without touching the service.
So here is the whole thing in order, written for the homeowner who is still deciding.
What is behind your gas range right now
Almost nothing you can use.
A gas range in this town is typically plugged into an ordinary 120-volt, 15-amp receptacle behind the stove. That feeds the igniter, the clock, the oven light, and the convection fan if it has one. It draws a few amps.
An induction range wants 240 volts on a dedicated circuit at 40 or 50 amps. There is no version of this where we reuse the existing receptacle, add a converter, or split something off a nearby circuit. It is a new run from the panel to the kitchen, and that run is the job.
While we are on it, the gas line has to be capped properly by a licensed plumber. That is a separate trade and a separate permit line item, and it is not something to leave to the appliance delivery crew.
The number that actually governs: the nameplate
Every manufacturer publishes a minimum circuit ampacity and a maximum overcurrent protection figure for the specific model. That is the number we size to. Not the width of the range, not the tonnage equivalent somebody quoted you, and not what your neighbor’s electrician did last year.
In practice, most 30-inch induction ranges land on a 40-amp circuit, some require 50, and 36-inch and 48-inch models frequently want 50 or more. Code sets a floor here too: a household range rated at 8.75 kW or more gets a 40-amp branch circuit minimum.
Two details that matter on installation day. The circuit has to be four wire, meaning two hots, a neutral, and an equipment ground. The neutral is not optional, because the controls, the display, and the oven light all run on 120 volts. And the range either hardwires or lands on a receptacle, usually a 14-50, depending on what the manufacturer’s instructions call for. If your installer plans to reuse a three-wire setup from an old electric range that came out in 1985, that is a conversation to have before the wall closes.

Does your service have room? The part most people get wrong
This is where the guessing usually happens, and where the answer is more encouraging than homeowners expect.
People assume a 9.6 kW range adds 9.6 kW to their house’s calculated load. It does not. Under Article 220, a single household range rated at 12 kW or less counts as 8 kW of demand in the calculation, and ranges above 12 kW add a percentage on top of that. The code writers assumed, correctly, that nobody runs four burners and a self-cleaning oven at full tilt while the dryer and the air conditioner are both going.
So an induction range is a smaller addition to a load calculation than an EV charger, which gets counted at its full continuous rating. I have upgraded plenty of panels for cars. I have upgraded far fewer for stoves.
That said, the calculation still has to be run, and Naperville expects to see it. The city publishes its own residential load calculation worksheet for exactly this situation, described as a way to size the minimum service for an existing dwelling adding load. One wrinkle worth knowing: the worksheet the city posts is built on Article 220 of the 2017 code, while permitted electrical work in Naperville is inspected against the 2023 National Electrical Code. It is worth confirming with the plans examiner which version they want to see on your submittal rather than assuming.
Where a 100-amp service starts to run out of room is not the range by itself. It is the range plus everything else that has been added since 1978. Central air, a finished basement, a second-floor laundry, a hot tub, a car. The route is the price, not the circuit
Here is the thing that moves a quote by a factor of three, and it has nothing to do with the range.
Where is your panel, and what is between it and the kitchen?
If your panel is in the basement directly below the kitchen and there is open joist bay to work in, this is straightforward. We come up through the floor inside a cabinet bay, land the receptacle, and the drywall never gets touched. That is the good version, and it describes a lot of the split-levels and two-stories around Cress Creek and Ashbury.
If the kitchen sits over a finished basement with a drywall ceiling, we are either fishing a long run through soffits and interior walls or opening and patching. If the house is on a slab, which shows up in Naperville in some ranch and addition construction, we are going up, around, and back down, and the run gets long. If the panel is in an attached garage at the opposite end of the house, same story.
None of that is exotic work. It is just hours, and hours are the bill. When somebody quotes you over the phone without asking where the panel is, they are guessing. Our remodeling electrician cost breakdown for Naperville goes into how these jobs get priced by project type.
Where the receptacle goes
Small thing, causes real problems.
The outlet cannot sit where the back of the range needs to be, or the range will not push flush to the wall and you get a gap at the counter. Manufacturers publish a rough-in diagram showing an acceptable zone, usually low and offset to one side, sometimes inside the adjacent base cabinet. We work to that drawing.
Also worth doing while the range is out: check that the anti-tip bracket is present and actually anchored. On induction it matters just as much as it did on gas, and I find them loose or missing constantly.
If you are doing a cooktop and a separate wall oven
Two appliances, two nameplates, two dedicated circuits. This surprises people who priced the job as one range.
A separate induction cooktop and a wall oven usually total more connected load than a single freestanding range, and they lose the benefit of the single-range demand allowance in the load calculation. If your kitchen designer is drawing a cooktop-plus-wall-oven layout, get the electrical scoped against that drawing rather than against a range, because the answer can change from “your panel is fine” to “your panel is not.”
While we are in the kitchen, this is also the moment to fix the circuit count. When the panel says no
Three options, in ascending order of cost.
A subpanel, if the service itself has capacity but the panel is physically out of slots. This is common in houses where the original panel was sized right and then filled. We explain the difference in our post on what a subpanel is and when you need one.
A load management device, if the calculation is the constraint rather than the box. These monitor total draw and shed a chosen load, most often a car charger, when the house pulls too much. The 2023 code recognizes them, and they can keep a 100-amp service viable through a kitchen conversion. We use the same approach for two EVs on one panel, and the logic transfers directly.
A service upgrade to 200 amps, when neither of the above gets you there, or when the existing panel is a Federal Pacific or Zinsco that I would be replacing anyway. The option nobody mentions: skip the 240-volt circuit entirely
A handful of manufacturers now build full-size induction ranges and cooktops with an integrated battery, so the appliance plugs into an ordinary 120-volt outlet. The battery charges slowly off the standard circuit and discharges fast when you cook. Copper’s Charlie is a 30-inch range with a 5 kWh battery, Electra makes a 30-inch range, and Impulse builds 30 and 36-inch cooktops on the same idea.
I bring these up with customers honestly, including when it costs me the circuit run. If your panel is full, your kitchen is over a finished basement, and the wiring quote is landing where a service upgrade starts to look inevitable, one of these can be cheaper all in even though the appliance itself costs more. They also keep cooking during an outage, which in this part of DuPage County is not nothing.
The tradeoffs are real. The appliance price is high, the model selection is narrow, and they carry a battery you will eventually be responsible for. Copper’s Charlie also has specific siting requirements, including an outlet within about three feet of the back of the range, and it needs 32-inch doorways to get into the house. Measure your hallway before you order.
My rule of thumb: get the wiring quoted first. If the electrical comes in low, buy a conventional range and put a proper circuit in. If the electrical is the expensive part of your project, price a battery model against it before deciding.
Sequence and permits
Order matters more than people think.
Get the electrical scoped and quoted before you buy the appliance. Pull the permit. Naperville requires one before any electrical work, and the work has to be done by a licensed contractor registered with the city. Rough the circuit in while the kitchen is torn up, not after the backsplash is on. Schedule the appliance delivery after the circuit is live and inspected, because the delivery crew will not wire anything and they will leave the range in your garage.

One non-electrical note, since it comes up every time: induction only works with magnetic cookware. Stick a refrigerator magnet to the bottom of your favorite pan before you commit to any of this.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run an induction range on a 30-amp circuit left over from an old dryer? Not for a full-size range. Most need 40 or 50 amps, and the old dryer circuit is usually three wire besides. Some 24-inch and apartment-size units run lighter, but check the nameplate rather than hoping.
Will my electric bill go up when I drop the gas range? Your electric bill goes up and your gas bill goes down. Induction is efficient enough that the swap is usually close to a wash on cooking alone, though the fixed monthly charge on the gas account keeps mattering if the furnace and water heater are still on gas.
How long does the whole job take? The circuit itself is typically one day of work. The calendar is set by permit review and by your kitchen schedule. Plan on a couple of weeks from approval to inspected circuit on a typical Naperville job, longer if a panel upgrade is part of it.
Do I need a new range hood? Not electrically, in most cases. Induction still produces steam and cooking grease, so venting outside is still worth doing, but the existing hood circuit usually carries over.
Is a 100-amp service automatically a problem? No. The single-range demand allowance means the calculation is often kinder than people expect. It depends on what else is in the house. That is a load calculation, not a guess, and we run it before quoting.
