Ford F-150 Lightning Home Charger Installation in Downers Grove: Charge Station Pro Wiring and the Bidirectional Piece Most Installers Skip

If you just picked up a Ford F-150 Lightning and the free Charge Station Pro that comes with the extended-range battery is sitting in the box in your garage, your Downers Grove home needs three things to make it work: a 100-amp dedicated branch circuit, a panel that can actually spare 100 amps of continuous load, and an installer who knows how the Ford Home Integration System changes the wiring plan if you ever want the truck to power the house.

That third piece is where most installs fall short. I’ve walked into a lot of Downers Grove garages this year and found a Charge Station Pro mounted correctly and wired to the panel, but with none of the prep work that lets Ford’s Intelligent Backup Power actually function. If you paid for a truck that can run your house for three days during a ComEd outage, and the electrician didn’t set the site up for it, you paid for a feature you can’t use.

Here’s what a Lightning install in Downers Grove really involves.

Why the F-150 Lightning is not a “regular” EV install

Most home chargers people ask about (Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint, Wallbox Pulsar Plus) top out at 48 amps of usable output. That’s a 60-amp breaker with #6 copper, and a 200-amp Downers Grove panel with reasonable existing load can carry one on a straight load calc.

The Ford Charge Station Pro is different. It’s an 80-amp charger. To pull that full 80 amps, the extended-range Lightning uses dual onboard chargers rated for 19.2 kW combined. To feed it, code (NEC 210.19 and 625.42) wants a 100-amp branch circuit, because the charger is a continuous load, and continuous loads have to be sized to 125% of running current. 80A x 1.25 = 100A.

That number rewrites the install for most homes:

  • You need a 100A double-pole breaker in the panel, not a 60A one.
  • Wire jumps to #3 or #2 copper (or #1 aluminum) depending on run length and derating.
  • Conduit sizing goes up.
  • Your panel needs to actually carry that 100A of continuous load on top of everything else in the house.

That last point is where most Downers Grove homes hit a wall. A 200-amp service with central AC, an electric range, and a heat pump water heater is already carrying real load. Add 100A of continuous EV, and a full load calc under NEC 220 can come back over service capacity. When it does, you’re looking at a 320A or 400A service upgrade, a load management device, or dialing the Charge Station Pro’s output down.

Ford lets you dial it down, and often that’s the right call

The Charge Station Pro has adjustable output, from 20A up to 100A of breaker rating (80A usable). This gets skipped in a lot of quotes and it shouldn’t.

For most Lightning owners in Downers Grove, dialing the charger to 48A actually makes sense. At 48A you get about 30 miles of range per hour on an extended-range Lightning, which is 300 miles over a 10-hour overnight window. Nobody with a home charger drives 300 miles a day, every day. Dialing back also drops the circuit to 60A, wire to #6, and cuts the load-calc impact by roughly half. The 80A rating is only worth it if you routinely need a full charge in 8 hours instead of 13.

I still install plenty of Lightnings at the full 80A. Usually those are newer builds on the west side of Downers Grove with 200A service, gas heat, gas range, and light existing electrical load. But if a client with a 100A panel and central AC calls asking about a Charge Station Pro at full output, we have a real conversation before we quote it, not after.

The bidirectional piece nobody explains at the dealership

The Charge Station Pro is not just a charger. Paired with the Ford Home Integration System (HIS), it becomes a bidirectional interface: the Lightning’s battery can power your Downers Grove house during a ComEd outage. On the extended-range battery pack, that runs about three days of typical household use.

To make that work, the site needs three things beyond the charger itself:

  1. A Ford-approved Home Integration System, which is the transfer equipment, the inverter interface, and the automatic transfer switch (ATS) that isolates your house from the grid so you’re not backfeeding energized wire onto ComEd’s poles.
  2. A dark start battery. This is a small stationary home battery that lets the HIS wake up and start pulling from the truck when grid power drops.
  3. Ford’s specified installer relationship. Ford’s stated recommended partner is Sunrun, and the Ford support page on the Charge Station Pro is direct about that.

The electrical side of the HIS install (the ATS, the load center for the backed-up critical circuits, the interlocked conduit runs) is standard-issue work for a licensed electrician who does generator transfer switches regularly. The difference is that the Lightning is the generator, and the wiring plan has to accommodate it from day one.

Most installers I see in Downers Grove skip planning for HIS entirely. They mount the charger, run the 60A circuit, close the wall up. If that homeowner later decides they want the backup feature, we’re opening the drywall again, adding an ATS, rewiring a critical-loads panel, and pulling a new permit. It’s an expensive redo. Cheaper to rough it in at install time even if HIS isn’t going in immediately. A spare 3/4″ conduit stub from the charger location to where the ATS would live costs almost nothing at rough-in and thousands to add later.

What Village of Downers Grove permitting looks like for a Lightning install

Every Downers Grove EV charger install needs an electrical permit. The Village pulls the application through the Building Division, and inspections happen through DuPage County’s inspector network on the Village’s behalf. In practice, here’s the timeline I quote clients:

  • Permit application: 1 business day after site visit (I file it, you don’t do paperwork).
  • Village issues permit: usually 3 to 5 business days.
  • Rough-in and finish: same day if the panel is on the same wall as the charger location, 1 to 2 days if we’re pulling a long run to a detached garage or an EV parked outside the primary structure.
  • Final inspection: typically 3 to 7 business days after we call for it.

Total: roughly 2 to 3 weeks from signed estimate to green sticker on the panel.

The Village inspector for EV chargers focuses on four things:

  1. Load calculation on file. For an 80A charger, the calc has to include the 100A continuous EV load on top of your existing service demand.
  2. Correct breaker size and wire type for the actual amperage set on the Charge Station Pro (not the max the charger is rated for, the value you locked it at).
  3. GFCI or GFPE protection where required. NEC 625.54 is clear on this.
  4. A working disconnect within sight of the charger, or a lockable breaker in the panel with proper labeling.

Number 2 trips people up. If we set the Charge Station Pro to 48A output but wire it for 80A, the inspector wants documentation that the setting is locked, and the placard on the charger has to reflect the actual amperage. This is a 2024 NEC update most part-time installers haven’t caught up on yet, and it’s one of the failed-inspection items we see most often on hardwired EV chargers.

The panel question in older Downers Grove homes

Downers Grove has a wide range of housing stock. The subdivisions off 63rd Street and Belmont Road built in the 70s and 80s frequently have 100A or 150A service panels. The homes closer to downtown near Main Street Metra can still have 60A service and, in some cases, knob-and-tube branch circuits behind the plaster.

If you own one of those older homes, a Lightning install is usually a two-part job. We’re not just running a circuit. We’re upgrading the service.

  • 60A service: a full upgrade to 200A is required, no exceptions. That means a ComEd disconnect and reconnect, meter base swap, service entrance conductor replacement, and grounding upgrade. Roughly $4,500 to $7,500 depending on how the meter is mounted and whether the mast needs replacing.
  • 100A service: sometimes we can add a Charge Station Pro at 32A to 48A output with a smart load management device (DCC-9 or Wallbox Power Boost). Sometimes we still need to upgrade. It depends on your existing loads and whether you have gas or electric heat.
  • 150A or 200A service: usually workable with a load calc, especially at 48A output. Full 80A output requires more careful math.

What we actually install at a typical Downers Grove Lightning job

For reference, here’s the parts list on a recent job I finished on a 1990s split-level off 63rd Street, with a 200A panel, gas heat, and a Charge Station Pro at 48A output:

  • 60A 2-pole breaker (Square D QO, matched to the existing panel).
  • 6/3 NM-B copper cable, 42 feet from panel to garage wall.
  • Bonded, weather-tight 1-inch EMT stub from the charger up to attic space for a future HIS conduit.
  • Charge Station Pro hardwired (not plug-in), with the internal DIP switch set to 60A max input and locked.
  • Labeled placard on the charger showing 48A actual output.
  • Panel schedule updated, permit closed, sticker signed.

Total install cost, not including the charger (Ford includes the Charge Station Pro with the extended-range Lightning): $1,850. Job took one day on site. Inspection passed on first visit.

That’s what a clean install looks like. If a quote you’re comparing lands substantially below that number, ask what’s not included. Usually it’s the permit, the load calc, or the correct wire size.

Hardwired or plug-in? The Lightning changes the answer

For lower-amp chargers, we sometimes install to a NEMA 14-50 outlet on a 50A circuit instead of hardwiring. The tradeoff is real: outlets let you unplug the charger and take it with you, but they add a failure point, and NEC 625.42 now requires them to be GFCI-protected in certain configurations, which adds cost and can cause nuisance tripping.

For the Charge Station Pro specifically, hardwiring is the only real answer. The 80A output is well above what any NEMA outlet can handle (a 14-50 tops out at 50A). Even at 48A output, hardwiring gives you a cleaner install, no receptacle failure risk, and no GFCI complication. How much does a Ford F-150 Lightning charger installation cost in Downers Grove?

For a typical 200A panel with the Charge Station Pro dialed to 48A output, expect $1,500 to $2,200 for a standard 30-to-50-foot run to an attached garage. Full 80A installs run $2,200 to $3,500 due to heavier wire and larger conduit. Older homes needing a service upgrade first can push the total to $6,500 to $10,000.

Do I need to upgrade my panel for a Charge Station Pro?

Sometimes, not always. A 200A panel with gas appliances is usually fine at 48A output. A 100A panel needs either a service upgrade, a smaller charger, or a load management device. We run a full NEC 220 load calc on your actual panel before we quote.

How long does the install take?

One day of electrical work in most cases. Two if we’re trenching to a detached garage. Add 1 to 3 weeks on top of that for the Village permit and final inspection.

Can I set up bidirectional charging (power my house from the truck) later?

Yes, but it costs less to prep for it during the initial charger install. A spare 3/4″ conduit stub, an unused panel space reserved for a future ATS, and correct grounding at rough-in add maybe $150 to $300 to your job and save several thousand later if you decide to add the Home Integration System.
