Most of the smart home quotes I see in Naperville are wrong before anyone touches a wall. Not because the electrician is dishonest. Because the homeowner asked for a price on “smart home wiring” without anyone agreeing on what that phrase means, and the number that comes back is a guess wearing a suit.

This is what that work actually costs in 2026, what changes the number, and where the low bid quietly moves money into your next project.

What people mean by smart home wiring (and what they usually get quoted)

When a homeowner says smart home, they usually mean one of three very different jobs, and the price gap between them is enormous.

The first is smart devices on existing wiring. Wi-Fi switches, a smart thermostat, a video doorbell, maybe smart plugs. This is not really a wiring job. It is a device swap that sometimes needs a neutral conductor pulled to a switch box that never had one, which is common in Naperville homes built before the mid-1980s.

The second is structured wiring. Cat6 or Cat6a runs from a central panel out to every room that needs a hardwired connection: access point locations, TV walls, an office, cameras, a doorbell, sometimes speaker or shade runs. This is the part people underestimate, and it is the part that is nearly impossible to add cheaply once the drywall goes back up.

The third is an electrical remodel that happens to include automation. New circuits, a subpanel, load calculations, relocated devices, a lighting control system, and structured cabling on top. This is where the real money is, and it is also where the low bid does the most damage.

If your contractor quoted you one number without asking which of these you actually want, that number is not a quote. It is a hope.

The Naperville permit rule nobody tells homeowners about

Here is the part that surprises people, including some contractors. Naperville requires a permit before any electrical work begins inside city limits, and that requirement reaches into low-voltage work too. According to the City of Naperville electrical permit page, the permit requirement covers low-voltage wiring for security systems and data cable networks that exceed 25 volts or 50 watts, all installations must be done by a state-licensed electrical contractor registered with the City of Naperville, and the work has to comply with the 2017 National Electrical Code.

Read that again: registered with the City of Naperville. Not just licensed somewhere in Illinois. This is the single most common way a smart home job goes sideways here. A low-voltage integrator or an AV company shows up, pulls beautiful Cat6, does clean work, and has no standing to pull the permit. Then the inspector arrives for the rest of the remodel and you are having a conversation nobody budgeted for.

Naperville also runs its own municipal electric utility rather than ComEd, which means the service side of a panel upgrade goes through the city instead of a regional utility. That changes scheduling more than it changes cost, but it changes scheduling a lot.

These are the ranges I quote from, in a typical Naperville single-family home with reasonable attic or basement access. They assume permitted, code-compliant work by a licensed contractor.

A number in the middle of those ranges is a normal job. A number well under the bottom means something was left out, and it is almost always the permit, the panel work, or the load calculation.

The four things that actually move the price

Whether the walls are open

This is the biggest lever, and it is not close. The same 20 Cat6 drops that cost me a day and a half in an open-stud remodel can cost three or four days in a finished house, plus drywall repair somebody has to pay for. If you are already remodeling, wire for more than you think you need. Cable is cheap while the wall is open and expensive forever after.

I tell people to run a drop to every place they might ever mount a screen, an access point, or a camera, even if there is no plan for one today. The marginal cost of an extra run during a remodel is often under a hundred dollars. The cost of adding it in three years is ten times that.

Panel capacity

Smart home gear does not draw much power on its own. A network rack and a lighting processor are small loads. The problem is that smart home remodels rarely arrive alone. They show up alongside a kitchen with induction, a finished basement, a hot tub, an EV charger, or all of it. That is what fills a panel.

Before I price anything, I run a load calculation. If the panel is a 100A or an older 150A that is already crowded, the honest answer is that the automation budget has a panel upgrade hiding inside it. Age of the house

Naperville has three distinct housing stocks and they price very differently. Homes in the older sections near downtown and the historic district can have cloth wiring or original two-wire circuits with no ground, which means a smart switch has nowhere to land its neutral. Homes from roughly 1965 to 1973 sometimes have aluminum branch circuits, which is a whole separate conversation before anyone touches a device. Newer subdivisions on the west side usually have modern wiring and a panel with room to grow, and those jobs come in near the bottom of the ranges above.

Device count and system choice

A house with 40 smart switches costs more than a house with 12. Obvious. What is less obvious is that a wired lighting control system like Lutron RA3 costs several times what individual Wi-Fi switches cost, and it is worth it in a large house and pointless in a small one. I have talked plenty of people out of the expensive system. A three-bedroom colonial does not need a lighting processor. A 5,000 square foot house with 60 loads probably does.

Why the cheap bid is not cheap

I get called to fix smart home installs about as often as I get called to do them. The pattern is consistent.

Someone hired an integrator or a general contractor’s handyman to pull the low-voltage. No permit, because nobody registered with the city was on the job. The cable got run stapled to the same stud bay as the line-voltage romex, which creates interference problems that show up as network dropouts nobody can diagnose for a year. Smart dimmers got put on circuits without a neutral, so they got installed with a workaround that heats up. Then the panel could not carry the new loads and the whole thing got wired off a doubled-up breaker.

None of this is visible on the day it is finished. It looks great. It shows up eighteen months later as flickering, as a network that fails at random, as a failed inspection during a home sale, or as a warm breaker. Fixing it costs more than doing it right, because now the walls are closed.

The permit is not bureaucracy. It is the only part of this process where somebody who does not work for you looks at the work.

What to ask before you sign anything

Ask whether the contractor is registered with the City of Naperville as an electrical contractor, not just licensed in Illinois. Ask to see the load calculation, and if the answer is that they did not do one, you have your answer about the rest of the quote. Ask what happens to the price if the panel needs upgrading, because a quote that does not address the panel is a quote that will change. Ask whether the low-voltage and the line-voltage work are on the same permit and the same responsible party, because when they are split between two companies, the seams are where problems live.

Ask for the drop count in writing. “Structured wiring throughout” is not a scope. “22 Cat6a drops terminated and tested to these locations” is a scope.
