What It Costs to Install an EV Charger in a La Grange Home (and Why Your Panel Is the Deciding Factor)

You bought the car. You’ve got the charger in the box, or a browser tab open on three of them. Now you want a number: what does it actually cost to get a Level 2 charger wired up in a La Grange home?

The honest answer is that the charger is the cheap part. What moves the price up or down is your electrical panel, and in a lot of La Grange houses that’s where the real story is. I’ll walk through what we typically see on jobs around the village, why two homes on the same street can get very different quotes, and how to figure out which situation you’re in before anyone comes out.

The Short Version: What La Grange Homeowners Usually Pay

For a straightforward install, most La Grange homeowners land somewhere between $600 and $1,500 for labor and materials, on top of whatever the charger itself cost. “Straightforward” means the panel has room, it’s reasonably close to where the car parks, and nobody has to open up walls.

Once the panel needs work, the number climbs. Here’s roughly how it breaks down:

  • Easy install ($600–$1,500): Modern panel with an open slot, short conduit run to the garage, plug-in or hardwired unit.
  • Install plus a subpanel or circuit rework ($1,500–$3,000): Panel’s full but the service can handle the load, so we add capacity.
  • Install plus a full panel upgrade ($2,500–$5,000+): The older 100-amp service common in La Grange’s pre-war homes can’t take a 40-amp EV circuit without an upgrade to 200 amps first.

So when someone asks why their neighbor paid $900 and their quote is $3,800, the answer is almost always sitting in the basement or the garage: the panel.

Why Your Panel Is the Deciding Factor

A Level 2 home charger runs on 240 volts, the same kind of circuit your electric dryer or range uses. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, most residential Level 2 chargers run at up to 30 amps and need a dedicated 40-amp circuit to meet National Electrical Code requirements (Article 625). That’s a meaningful chunk of capacity to carve out.

Here’s where La Grange comes in. A good number of homes near the historic core, the ones around the Stone Avenue and La Grange Road Metra stops, still run on 100-amp service. That was plenty in an era of a fridge, a furnace fan, and a few lights. Add central AC, a modern kitchen, and now a car that wants 40 amps for eight hours a night, and the math stops working. The panel is already close to maxed out.

  • Distance from panel to parking spot. Ten feet of conduit is cheap. A run from a basement panel out to a detached garage at the back of a La Grange lot is not. More wire, more labor, sometimes a trench.
  • Hardwired vs. plug-in. A NEMA 14-50 outlet is often cheaper up front. Hardwiring is cleaner and required for some higher-amp units. We’ll tell you which your charger needs.
  • Detached garages. Common in the older parts of the village. Running power out there safely, often underground, adds cost but it’s very doable.

How to Figure Out Which Situation You’re In

You can get a rough read before anyone comes out. Go find your main electrical panel and look at the main breaker at the top. It’ll have a number stamped on it: 100, 150, or 200. That’s your service size in amps.

If it says 200, you’re probably in good shape for a simple install. If it says 100 and your home already has central air and an electric range or dryer, there’s a real chance you’ll need to talk about capacity. Not a guarantee, just a heads-up so the quote doesn’t blindside you.

Either way, don’t try to size or install this yourself. A 40-amp continuous load wired wrong is a genuine fire risk, and it’s exactly the kind of thing a permit and inspection exist to catch.
